A brief rest...

You'll have to bear with me this week, blog readers.  I have several cool things in the works, but as I had some minor back surgery today I'm not going to get anything together immediately.

 But as a teaser for posts to come, topics include: a NEW EASY way to paint a steampunk gun, recovering a parasol, and my first blog contest!

In the meantime, have you seen the new McCall steampunk pattern?



I'm pretty damn impressed with it.  It's got a bunch of useable pieces to mix and match with your existing outfits: jacket, tie-on bustle, fishtail skirt, and bloomers.

      But to be fair I've seen a LOT of bustles that look exactly like this one and that one, from a lot of different companies and makers. There's even an instructable out there on how to make one.

    I saw this pattern when it was on sale for $1. I blinked, turned my head sideways, closed one eye... and it's still hideous. I thought, "maybe this is actually cool? Maybe it's just got awful lace, bad makeup, and bad hair?" But no, I'm pretty sure it actually is really ugly.

    But if anyone makes it, I'd love to see it! Maybe in another fabric it'd be nice.

    On the other hand, my Simplicity jacket with the ruffle is AWESOME, and I'm looking forward to making my dress with the removable bustle and 14 yds of fabric. Simplicty wins the steampunk pattern contest in my opinion!

      I usually have a really hard time seeing the potential in pattern photos with the horrible hair and makeup and sometimes fit and material choices! But it's hard to pass one up when it costs $1...so yeah, I bought it...I really do love the bloomers, and I like a lot of pieces that I can mix and match. I always prefer to look at the line drawings on the back and inside of the pattern.

    I just got this pattern when McCalls patterns were on sale 5/$5. I probably have a problem with pattern buying when they are on sale like that (seriously, how can you not when you look at your receipt and you've saved $159 or something? Pattern prices are ridiculous!). I mostly got it for the bloomers, I think I am going to make them for the upcoming Steampunk Ball in Portland along with the underbust corset from a Simplicity pattern and one of the several jackets I have. A friend of mine did the jacket from Simplicity 2172, but altered it and made it bustled (because she's awesome at that), and I might have her help me with that, because bustles make everything better.

    I was so impressed by this pattern that I picked it up the first opportunity I had. and to my great luck - the first opportunity was a .99 sale! Now to look for the right fabric to start making it up!

    PS - hope you recover quickly - I just found your blog and am loving it so far!

    Parasol recovering tutorial? Oooh yes please. I'm working on creating a lace parasol right now and I'm sure I'll be able to glean some useful advice from your article, even if it's not exactly what I'm doing!
